Review ~ Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

TITLE: Gone Girl
AUTHOR: Gillian Flynn
COPYRIGHT: 2012
TYPE: General Fiction
PAGES: 395
SERIES:
no

REASON FOR READ:
B/c of all the hype regarding the movie. Thought I have to read this before I see the movie

SUMMARY (from Goodreads):
On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife's head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media--as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents--the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter--but is he really a killer?
As the cops close in, every couple in town is soon wondering how well they know the one that they love. With his twin sister, Margo, at his side, Nick stands by his innocence. Trouble is, if Nick didn't do it, where is that beautiful wife? And what was in that silvery gift box hidden in the back of her bedroom closet?

THOUGHTS/OPINION:
First off this was one of those books that I read so quickly I couldn't even advertise that I read it. I picked it up on a Thursday night from the library and by Friday I had finished it. Between meetings, sleep and on eating breaks I continued to push through this book. Why all the stopping? B/c at times I absolutely felt dirty for reading it and liking it so much. The characters are so deranged and morbid that I felt nasty that I was devouring this book at a speed that shocked even me. I had to know more, I wanted to know more and yet I felt like a voyeur peaking in on a family that needs not only counseling, therapy and shock treatment but also a family that really should've have just walked away from each other. The book has been reviewed numerous places so I won't go further with yet another recap. I will however say I still can't tell if I love this book or hate it. I can't tell if I enjoyed it b/c my gosh I feel better about my life or if I enjoyed it because dang yo she was super smart.

Did I connect with any characters? nope. Did I want to be either of the characters? HELL NO. Did I find that I couldn't put the book down? Oddly yes. Would I recommend it? yeah which I can't decide if that makes me as messed up as the author who wrote the damn thing.

Needless to say I enjoyed it enough I will check out other books by this author.

FINAL GRADE: I really struggled giving this a grade and kept hopping between 3 or 4 stars

Would you recommend this story? Oddly yes

  1. I've read two books by this author and both of them made me feel this way. I don't think that I liked any of the characters in either book but yet I couldn't set the books down. I though that they did a pretty good job with the movie for this one. It is as disturbing as the book to be honest :) I will definitely read more by this author just to see what she comes up with next!

    1. Good to know that about her other books. I do find I still think about this one so I guess that's a sign it was a good book. Still feel slightly dirty that I asked the follow through of the crazy lady. And you're right the movie did an excellent job of showing the crazy.
